During six days in the field, we studied the butterflies of an olive orchard in the vicinity of Lake Garda (Northern Italy) in July 2000. We found 535 individuals of 32 species. The number of species per day stayed approximately constant, whereas the observed number of individuals was higher at the end of the observation period than at the beginning. That might be the consequence of the numerous hatching of M. tithonus. The community was dominated by three common species: M. jurtina, M. tithonus and C. pamphilus. In contrast, the majority of species was registered in a small number of individuals. Therefore, total numbers of species increased by numbers of field days showing a typical function of saturation. Using several estimators, the total number of species was calculated from 36 to 45 for this olive orchard in mid-July.
